Getting Puppy Ready for Summer

Doggy Wellness and Health

Summer is coming and your puppy is probably totally excited. Summer is a fun time for a lot of family dogs because the kids are home more, family spending more time outdoors, and puppy is going out more on trips.

Make sure to keep the summer safe for your doggy this summer. Here are some tips to help you get ready for summer.

Leave doggy at home

Warm weather means hot car. It is best to leave your doggy at home. If traveling with your dog bring bottled water and leave the air conditioner on. Cracking the window open is just not good enough. It is also not safe for dogs to ride in the cabin of the truck. I would not suggest kenneling dogs in the heat in the back of a pickup truck.

Paw pads are not shoes

The heat also means hot cement and pavement. Pads on dog feet are not heat proof. Always test the heat of the pavement while walking your dog.

Water and shade

If your dog wants to spend more time outside that is good. Be sure your dog has cold fresh water and shade to hide from the summer sun. I put out a mister fan for my dogs.

Trim and groom

Cutting back and grooming the winter fur off will help keep your dog cool.

Trip to the vet

Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations and preventatives. If you are planning to go on vacation make sure to check with the kennel the requirements needed to board your dog.

Yard check

Make sure your yard is secure and your dog cannot get out. Avoid keeping dogs chained as it limits them from getting out of the sun and escaping from danger.

Pool safety

Make sure your dog is safe from any swimming pools. If you want you could put up a kiddie pool for your dogs to stay cool in the summer.

Life vest

Get your dog a water life vest if you plan to spend time in the water such as the ocean, lake, or river.
